Elections 2013: In dire need of freedom of expression

Just saw something on Facebook and i had to write this.

In a politically charged environment, with elections just a few hours away, it seems that the most open-minded and liberal among usimages (1) have forgotten the basic principle of democracy. In a democracy citizens participate in public affairs, by respecting different point of views. The current situation of Pakistan appears to be quite contrary.

I am writing this because it is time that we talk some sense, elections are just a few hours away. If we believe in democracy we should also believe that everyone has a right to express what he feels.  I am not an absolutist and i am not dictating this to you, I am just saying this to you because i believe in democracy and so do i believe in freedom of expression.

Patience level appears to be very low on Facebook, Twitter and a couple of other social networking websites. Normal discussions become heated arguments and these arguments than turn in to abusive disputes. Sarcastic exchanges are common which lead to conflicts. The other day i heard someone saying “What the hell is wrong with everyone – I feel like committing a huge sin by not giving my vote to PTI”.

PTI, PML-N, PPP or any other party – it is an individual’s choice.  Don’t categorize individuals because of their political affiliations. Voting is a free right, so let it be. Influence others with logical and critical arguments – stop advocating and imposing.

Please cast your vote on  the basis of fair and objective evaluation and let others think for themselves. The following elections are very important for Pakistan’s future so make a wise decision. You still have time; Think – Analyze and Vote before it is too late.

As Abraham Lincoln said:

“The ballot is stronger than the bullet”

According to NADRA/ ECP, only 2.5 crore people (out of 8 crore eligible voters) have so far checked their vote status through SMS at 8300.
This is less than 30 %, and it means that 70 % of voters still don’t know where to go to cast their vote on election day. Please confirm your polling station and vote by sending a text to 8300 with your CNIC number. Mobile phones may not work on 11th May. Just an hour left.

Please vote, it is your right – it is your Pakistan, now or never!
